I got the elevators rods cut and installed tonight. We are waiting on larger bushings for the rudder. Calling it a night early. The powerplant should arrive tomorrow!!!! We are using a 2.5 degree offset SWB motor mount to properly position the 200. The firewall is offset to the left, but no right thrust is molded in so you can choose the amount you want.

Exhaust...length is fine, but not sure of drop just yet. It may be too much. We will address that once the motor is mounted. That is next along with landing gear and cowl.

Got the tail done. If you look closely you can see I crimped one end of the stainless hinge rod and then cut a slit in a metal strap. This will mechanically secure the rod to the surface to prevent rotation in the surface. I used the clevises provided on the control surfaces and Dubro links on the servos. Rods are titanium from SWB and Hangar 9. We opted for direct drive rudder servos for precision. SWB 1-1/2 inch arms all the way around will provide plenty of throw for IMAC. I got started on the landing gear...still need to finish mounting. Its getting late. Pics from today.

What kind of tail wheel are you going to use? Do they send one with the kit?
It looks like the bolt on the servo arm for the elevator is hitting the skin when you give it down elevator. You may have to open the slot there to prevent binding.

see you soon,
John

No tailwheel in the kit. Probably J&J flat carbon fiber or something similar. The servo arm screw is hitting, but I will set up a max throw limit on the radio to prevent that. It has plenty of elevator for IMAC.

Cristian Hi, My name is Doug Bracey and Kevin Wilson is putting the Sukhoi together for me and I was wondering if you could shoot me some pics of the inside of yours etc.
Did you use a DA 200cc engine if so did the cannisters and headers from Desert Aircraft work ok?
Or if not which engine did you use and how is the performance?
Also what kind of servos, power expander etc did you use for your sukhoi?

Hey Doug,
I have plenty of pictures of the inside posted at FG, but I'll post them here too, but that will have to be tomorrow..
I have the Da170 and R3 pipes, that is more that enought for this bird, I used 9157's all around but the rudder, there I have 2 8711 with an SWB self adjusting servo tray.
I have also Smart-Fly EQ10 with turbo Reg and Fromecos 5200 for Rx and 2600 for ignition, also It has Ignition cut of and Ig regulator for the 7.4V Fromeco Batt.
Please wait till tomorrow eve for more pictures..

Gil,

I'm not sure what you mean by rolled left. It is perfectly level. It is however offset to the left to account for the right thrust of the mount. This puts the propeller perfectly centered on the partline.

Hey Doug.

I didn't have any problems with LG plates, however, at first I tried to use a 90mm drop that i had, with those, there was no problem with the LG, but the pipes were too high at the rear, so I cut the 90mm and welded,to make them 50mm drop and problem was solved.

I painted the inside of the spats black to show the wheels a little better. I also wanted to show the White Rose axles go through the spats and the carbon gear and still had just enough thread. I secured the spats rotationally with a 3mm screw and blind nut installed into the spat.

Also got the tank and power expander installed on the huge removable carbon sandwich plate. That is the new 60oz. DuBro tank with a Fromeco tank turnaquet. We used the SWB stopper assembly on the tank.

It was close enough. All I did was put the tank in the tray while I glued the pieces to the plate. Then once dry, I came back and filled the gaps in the corners with more Hysol. Man that is good glue! I was surprised how close in size the 50 and 60 oz tanks are.

Cristian it looks like in your photos that you do not have any steering on your tailwheel.
Is that right or was it not installed at the time of the photo?
And if you did make it steerable how did you do this/
It seems like a long angle from the rudder horn to the arm on the tailwheel.

Hi Doug, I have plenty of steering, I'll take a closer picture, so you can see.
Nice wheels, but the thing I dont't like much is that they dont absorve the touch down impact, at least in asphalt fields....

Real men don't need manuals, I remember my first build thread, back in the day. Good job Kevin except for that tank

I have a set of those wheels they have soft rubber on them now, the old ones used to be hard poly, and they didn't give.

I love that clamp mounting on your pipes Cristian, does DA sell that? You never have to worry about that crappy wood mount.

I believe that is the KS comfort mount. If there is enough room, we are going to use it as well. I just got the header pieces today and will know more once the modifications are done.

I got one of the headers done tonight. I just need to clean it up on a wire wheel then will post some pictures.
I think we are going to use Zap Goo for the fillets, but not quite sure. I need to do some testing. If not we will use Hysol.
Well I had to send my engine to DA today so I will have plenty of time to get this plane done. I am going to shoot for finishing in two more weeks. We shall see.....

any mod that you had to do in order to make them work, or was it pretty much bolt it up and go?

Hi Joe,

Confort Mounts work great and they are very easy install, just bolt them on...
DA recomends 2 set for longer pipes like the R3's but I have beed using just one set for pipe on my 3M 260 for two years now without any issues...

Christian,
That is an interesting way of doing the fillets. I kind of like that and will give it some thought.
Dowd,
The 150 started making a funny noise and after checking prop bolts and exhaust, I found it did not rotate as smoothly as normal. I pulled the motor down and was planning on replacing the front bearing as it was bad, but upon further inspection, the crank was cracked from the keyway to the front bearing. So off it went to DA.
I am not sure if Doug will want to do the maiden, but I will definitely let you know when we do it.
Bruce,
We are using KS-95 rear exhaust cans.
Joe,
I confirmed with Tony yesterday that they carry KS mounts that fit RE3's

Thanks guys! I had ordered a pair of them. My goal is to rid the nasty dents that the typical cannister/pipe mounts give. DA had given me the warning that they hold no responsibility, nor recomend the KS mounts forthe RE3 - I ordered them anyway to see how they may work....i hope they sent the ones for the RE3's - or is it a one type fit all?

Build thread looks good - looking forward to seeing some suk's on the line!

Which goes to show that two heads are better than one when it comes to ideas.
Kevin and I hope that others may benefit from this build thread in the future.
Also its nice to have a friend like Kevin to build an plane for me.
I too have also experienced good service from DA thats why I bought a DA-200 instead of the Mintor engine.

THANK you and Dave very much for fixing & returning my engine so quickly. There is no comparison to the service that DA gives.

Now these "young 'uns" will definitely have to practice as I will be out there again today.....

Baffling is next. I am cutting out a template from poster board first and then will transfer the pattern to the actual plate. Peter Jackson is making the plates from 3/32" balsa sandwiched with light glass cloth. This should provide sufficient strength and relatively light weight. Thanks Pete!

Today I flew my SU again, with some mods..
I installed the wing fillets and the Air intake at plane belly, it lookx realy cool with this add ons.
The Fillets were attached to the Fuse with plywood, 4 screw per side and nuts.
The air intake was attached only with screws and plywood, 3 per side.
Today I also opende up the air intake to the fuse, as it was getting a little to hot for the electronics, the result was great, everything is cooler now..
Also I found out wat coused me the glitch the other day, one of the R6014HS was touching some CF, so I reposition it so it does not touch it anymore, and no glitches during the 5 flights I made today.
Tomorrow we have the Imac opening, for the season so all ready but the fingers !!
Here are some pictures.

I got some work done this weekend, but was a little side tracked with my granddaughter in town for her 1st birthday!!! I finished the other header and figured out how I am going to mount the KS system. These mounts are nice.

I also finished the posterboard patterns for the baffle plates. This should give you a good idea of what the finished product will look like. The last picture is the material the plates will be made of, the 3/32 balsa fiberglass sandwich.

Got some work done today. I am not going to make the self imposed completion date of....well, today. Doug let me borrow a DA-150 and I have been at the field practicing 4 days this week (God knows I need it). Thanks Doug! Here are some pics of todays progress. BTW the all up weight of the last pics is 42lbs. I still need to mount the canopy, wing fillets, and wing servos and linkages. This means the ready to fly weight should come in under 45lbs and I will be very happy with that.

I was impressed until I saw the painters tape on the batteries, I have some nice foam and velcro to make that look better.

We are getting close, but I am not rushing it. I ran into a bit of delay with the exhaust extensions, but should have that worked out. I got the left wing completed and the right should be finished tomorrow. Then it is just the canopy (yes I saved the worst for last:laugh. Hopefully will be ready to maiden Saturday. Here are a couple of pics of the aileron servos so you can see the mounting setup.

Both wings are now done. We installed the LIMAC bearings in the ailerons like the other surfaces, but did not opt for the stainless tubes. We used the brass tubing included in the kit. This should be fine given we are using the DA 200. Otherwise I would definitely recommend the SS rods to minimize distortion. I mechanically secured the rods to the ailerons to ensure utilization of the bearings and facilitate easy removal if necessary. Here are some pics....

I got the fillets glued to the fuse sides and will finish with several screws and blind nuts. Got the ignition modules installed and found it best to go in through the firewall to keep the wires where they need to be.

Successful maiden yesterday! After a couple of hours setting up and tightening up some loose ends, we had an uneventful maiden voyage. A few clidks of left aileron and down elevator and she was on rails. The snaps are nice and stop very well. Hardly any mixing will be needed...just a slight bit of rudder to up elevator. There was absolutely no roll coupling in either direction. We got lucky and nailed the balance on the first try! (There was no manual so we totally guessed)
I can't say enough about the 200, what an awesome motor. It has the best midrange I have ever seen and vibration is non-existant. The ehaust was making a little noise where the tips were coming into contact with the fuse, but with the help of an Exacto knife, that problem was taken care of in short order.
Doug should get many good years out of this bird, and hopefully some IMAC wins!

Here are a few pics from yesterday. I should have some airborne pictures coming soon and will post later.

I guess I did not take a close up shot of the cowl after it was finished. I will do that this weekend and post. Yes it has stainless button head 6/32 screws into blind nuts epoxied to the inner cowl.
