Hi everybody! I am still kind of a newbie on what kind of planes are legal for what classes. I know uou can use just about anything in the basic class, but what kind of airplanes have to be used in higher up classes? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

www.modelaircraft.org/UserFiles/Scale%20Aerobatics.pdf

3. Open Events:
3.1: The events accommodate aerobatic monoplanes and biplanes which are replicas of types known to have competed in International Aerobatic Club (IAC) competition, or replicas of types known to be capable of aerobatic competition within the airspace know as the ―Box.‖
3.2: All classes except Basic require that the pilot must meet the requirements defined in Rule 3.1. The Basic Class is open to all competitors with a monoplane or biplane aircraft. There is no minimum size requirement for any class. Contest Directors may make an exception for a model of a full scale aircraft that was built for IAC competition, but has not yet competed. Proof of the latter is the responsibility of the contestant.

Yaks, Extra's seem to be what most in the upper classes fly.

Alex,

Their are a bunch of planes to chose from. The key is that the particular plane you sellect must have flown in IAC competition (full scale) ie. Extras, yaks, votec, caps, studacur, pitts, even decathalons you won't find many of those in imac though. extras and yaks seem to be the most popular. Pick a well established manufacturer like Carden, Comp-arf, exrtreme flight, Aero works, Radio wave to name a few, and it will save you many headaches. Remember that cheap always cost more in the long run.

Hey guys thanks for the replies! I have been flying in the basic class with a 50cc reactor. I am ready to move up to sportsman, but I didn't know if it was class legal. Looks like it is time to get a new airplane!

Tony, one small correction...
it need not have actually flown in competition....

Basic you can use anything. In the higher classes you need a scale plane. Scale as in there is a real plane like it.
