This may sound like a silly question, but could a person perform a basic routine using a Gee Bee?

http://www.eastrc.org/estoregeebee84.htm

If not, I'll have to consider a more conventional plane like the H9 27% Extra 260. http://www.hangar-9.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN2750

Thanks,

Not sure why those links are not working.

Frank,

Yes it is legal but the H9 27% Extra 260 would be a far better choice!

When you've got a YAK you have the Edge
and you don't need anything Extra!

Jim,

Thanks for the response. I understand it is legal, but my question is, could the Gee Bee be used to successfully perform the basic routine? I'd like to buy the Gee Bee, but I would also like to try my hand at IMAC next season, but can't afford to buy two different planes. If possible, I'd like to use a Gee Bee or the Ryan STA rather than getting the usual set up like a 260/Extra/Edge etc.

Link to the Ryan here: http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/159572.asp

I know it's an unusual choice, but that's why I am asking first before doing it.

Thanks for the info.

Frank,

What airplanes do you currently have?

You may not neccessarily have to buy a new airframe to try IMAC.

When I entered my first Basic contest 7 years ago I flew it with a GP PT-40 Trainer with an Enya .53 FS. I obviously was not very competitive with that airframe but I did nail a "9" on a Humpty Bump and that was it I was hooked. I had a blast! At that point I decided to switch gears from my ussual scale stuff and focused on aerobatic airframes like Extras, Edges and Yaks.

So you see you may not need to go and buy a new aiframe. Lets here what you have in your stable and then maybe you try a contest with what you have and then if you decide you like you might just want to get that H9 Extra 260 over the other two planes.

Depends on the pilot!

With practice, I'm sure it could!

None that I can use right now. I had a Wild Hare Edge 540 that had a DL-50 on it, but sold it a few weeks ago. The others are all glow; SSE, an X50 and an A60 that I bought as a trainer for my club.

That's why I am looking for a new plane that I can put a Syssa http://syssaaircraft.com/sap.html that I can also try my hand at Basic IMAC.

What is the X50?

You DON"T need a gas motor to give IMAC a try. I've ssn a kid with a Twist beat a guy with a 50cc iin Basic. It's youer flying not your euipment that makes the difference

I actually won basic with a Q-500 years ago (15).
The Ryan sta would probably be better than the
hee bee gee bee at imac but a dedicated Imac bird
would possibly raise the fun factor a bit for you.
Citabria? Clipped Cub? Zlin Acro? But Gee Bee??????

In answer to the original question, yes it can be done.

Energy management is going to be the key. I saw a C-ARF Gee-Bee that was way over powered do last years Intermediate routine a few weeks ago. Basically it had a Da150 on greves and the plane was 37lbs. It was not during a contest, he was just "horsing around".

It wasn't pretty but he did it several times.
